Primary Election
The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.

Dates and Deadlines
February 3 - First day to submit an Absentee Ballot Request; Caucus Day
March 2 - March 25 - County Candidate Filing Begins
March 20 - County candidate filing deadline for NPPO candidates, candidates nominated by petition, and township offices (open until 5pm)
March 25 - County candidate filing deadline for republican and democrat candidates (open until 5pm)
April 23 - Absentee Ballots will start being mailed out
May 4 - First day to vote in-person absentee
May 22 - Voter pre-registration deadline; Deadline to request an absentee ballot be mailed (open until 5pm)
May 25 - Memorial Day; Auditor's office closed
May 29 - Auditor's office open until 5pm
May 30 - Saturday; Auditor's office open 8am-4pm
June 1 - Absentee ballot in-person deadline (open until 5pm)
June 2 - Primary Election Day
